Tournée avec des villageois, comédiens non professionnels, cette fable écologique poignante est le premier film tourné entièrement en langue dong langue tibéto-​birmane. Critique François Truffaut disait que dans tout bon film de fiction il y a un documentaire. La Rizière’ se tient constamment sur la mince frontière entre fiction et documentaire.
